Pride in The Village

The Gay Village on Canal Street is one of the liveliest spots in Manchester, if not the liveliest, and is one of the most recognised gay quarters in the world.

Lined with bars, pubs, clubs, cafes and shops overlooking the scenic canal, the open-minded and infamous ‘village’ encompasses diversity, and is guaranteed to be heaving during the evenings, where both regulars & tourists get to mingle in a straight-friendly environment!

As summer comes around, big crowds are drawn in to the European like café culture that takes over the village. The street is filled with outdoor seating areas encouraging people-watching and cocktail-sipping!

However, fret not, you won’t be lulled into a coma if you’re visiting this summer, in fact you will have the very opposite experience…

From 19th-29th August, Manchester Pride will be taking place. Readers of the ‘Pink Paper’ have voted Manchester as the ‘best pride event’ in the UK for five consecutive years, so the event is definitely worth a peek…

This year there are ten days of partying lined up in celebration of Manchester Pride’s 21st birthday. ‘Pride Fringe’ kick starts the festivities, with over forty different types of events being held across the city  that are available to the public, such as dance, comedy, film & theatre and art. A highly anticipated event is the ‘Queer to Stay’ exhibition at The Lowry (arts venue).

Pride’s ‘Big Weekend’ is when the most carnage will occur. From Friday 26th until Monday, tens of thousands of people will descend rowdily on Canal Street, in anticipation of Saturday’s ‘Best of British’ themed parade and all the fun in-between – particularly Pride’s guest star Pixie Lott!

By day there are three stages displaying weird and wonderful world-class talent from far and wide. By night, the street comes to life with a carnival like atmosphere and partying in to the morning…the street never sleeps!

To make all the fun even more meaningful, Manchester Pride is a registered charity and since 2003 has raised £895,000 for local LGBT and HIV charities and groups.

It’s great fun, for a great cause, in an even greater city!
