SoBe recommends….Top 5 British Beaches

In a search for golden sands and clear blue seas, you no longer need to dig out your passport. Our Great British island has 5,000 miles of winding coastline. Whether you want to swim, surf or just avoid the crowds this summer, SoBe has it covered.

5. Calgary Bay, Scotland

Not only the finest in Scotland, Calgary bay also makes it onto our Top 5 list. This beautiful 5 mile sweep of sand is tucked away in the north-west corner of the island of Mull. Remote but easily accessible, the beach is framed by rocky headline giving it a private feel and making it ideal for a romantic get-away.

4. Rhossili Bay, South Wales

The most striking feature about this wide expanse of beach in South Wales is the intense buttercup colour of the sand. Complete with grass covered sweeping cliffs and a resident ship wreck, Rhossili beach was voted as the best spot to picnic last year. As the most Westerly point of the Gower peninsula, the wind and waters here can get pretty rough so best to pack more than just a bikini…

3. Botany Bay, Kent

Size clearly doesn’t matter, as Botany Bay comes in as our shortest beach at 200 metres long. Steep white chalk cliffs protect the many tourists that descend on the bay from the elements, and the seas blue flag rating only increases its popularity. Swimming, surfing and kayaking are all popular water activities, with an on duty lifeguard to keep things in order. Dogs are banned on the beach for most of the day in the height of the summer. Boo.

2. Littlecombe Shoot, Devon

Large cliffs keep this long pebble sweep an extremely well-guarded secret, so much so that there is little else on the beach than gusty winds and gnarled driftwood. More suited to the active, Littlecombe Shoot offers miles of coastal foot paths and spectacular views at every step.

1. Barafundle Bay, Pembrokeshire

This small and tranquil bay is protected by undulating sand dunes and wooded cliffs, making it accessible only on foot. But the half mile trek is well worth the effort at the first glimpse of the Caribbean-esq soft sand and Atlantic blue waters. Barafundle is definitely the jewel in Wales’ crown, and is a resident chart topper on the list of best beaches in Britain. Be prepared to be at one with nature, as this bay is so isolate there are absolutely no facilities within a one mile radius…
